"Directionality of Mitochondrial Electron Transport in Cardiac Ischemia & Reperfusion"

Paul S. Brookes, PhD
Professor
Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine
University of Rochester Medical Center

First, I will discuss controversies regarding whether mitochondrial complex II (succinate dehydrogenase) can really operate in two directions in a physiologically relevant setting, compared to isolated mitochondria.  I will then address the extracellular/intracellular fate of succinate in cardiac reperfusion.  Finally, I will discuss recent work on the reversal (or not) of mitochondrial complex I as a source of ROS during reperfusion.  Implications for therapeutic approaches to cardiac ischemia/reperfusion will also be discussed.
