“Placental origins of phthalate toxicity and child reproductive health”

The goal of our research is to use epidemiologic and experimental molecular methods to quantify human fetal endocrine disruption caused by maternal exposures to chemicals, specifically phthalates. The peroxisome proliferator activated receptor protein gamma (PPAR

) is expressed in the human placenta and regulates placental development, hormone synthesis, inflammation, and immune response. PPAR

has been proposed as a putative mediator of phthalate toxicity. In this study, we are evaluating this hypothesis by measuring and comparing the direct effects of phthalates on placental and fetal hormones versus the effects mediated by PPAR
